ANTI-COG MATERIAL No other group in the Jesus Movement has faced as much negative reaction and criticism as the COG. Much of this has been expressed in print, as books and as articles in magazines and journals. A significant part of the polemical material on the COG has come from one organization—Free Our Sons and Daughters from the Children of God (FREECOG). Formed by parents in 1971, it was one of the first "anti-cult" groups to emerge. It claimed that the Children were victims of kidnapping, brainwashing, drug and hypnotic control, and extortion. Its answer to the COG was to rescue members from the group in order to unconvert them. By soliciting the help of Ted Patrick, the deprogramming movement was thus kicked off. The group was later renamed Citizens Freedom Foundation as it expanded its attention to other cult groups, but an emphasis upon the evils of the COG and the need for deprogramming remains. Another major enemy of the COG has been the various Jesus People groups which have attacked the COG in their newspapers and magazines. They have generally sought to disassociate the COG from the rest of the Jesus Movement by criticizing its heretical beliefs and practices. In so doing, an effort is also made to "reach" members of the COG and/or to warn potential converts. 1655. Acts 17. INDEX TO COUNTERCULT RESOURCES. La Mesa, CA: Acts 17, 1978. AUDIO MATERIAL The audio material on the COG is in the same critical vein as the anti-COG printed material. The audio items, however, tend to give a more systematic description of the group in the process. There is also a stronger emphasis upon refuting COG theology and practices from a Biblical perspective, and often advice is given on how to witness to members, relate to ex-members, etc. 1716.
